Bio Dr. Happel is an assistant Professor of Medicine and is the newest faculty addition to the University's Alcohol Research Center, having joined the group in 2004. He is currently supported by an NIH career development award, and his research focus is pulmonary host defense mechanisms and the effects of ethanol consumption. In particular, the mechanisms by which ethanol impairs the adaptive response to infection are his specific interests. The long range goals of his research are to understand the specific mechanisms by which alcohol abuse impairs the lung's defenses to infection and to develop novel treatments which can overcome these acquired defects.
