Dr. Welsh's research activities range from laboratory investigations to clinical studies. His laboratory is focused on the biology of adult bone marrow derived stem cells as it relates to lung disease. Ongoing projects seek to determine the role of deficient stem cell trafficking to the lung in the pathogenesis of emphysema and to define the mechanisms involved in stem cell mobilization & engraftment in the lung using pre-clinical models. His translational research interests include the role of CD44 in bone marrow stem cell function in human emphysema. Additionally, Dr. Welsh serves as the Associate Director of the Louisiana Healthy Aging Study. He has developed a panel of indices of fitness that are used in this study of the genetic & metabolic determinants of successful aging. Dr. Welsh also supervises the research arm of the MCLNO HIV-Associated Pneumonia Management Program which analyzes factors influencing patient's clinical outcomes as well as serving as a resource for a number of ancillary studies by providing samples from a specimen bank linked to clinical data. |
