Heena was born in India and went to The Indian High School in Dubai, U.A.E. After finishing school in 1998, she joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. She graduated with a B.Tech. in Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering in May 2002, and joined the Department of Genetics as a graduate student in August 2002.
