Neurosurgery Student Clerkship

The Department of Neurosurgery at LSUHSC offers clinical clerkships at both West Jefferson Medical Center and Medical Center of Louisiana.  The purpose of the clerkship is to provide 3rd and 4th year medical students with direct neurosurgical experience.  The clerkship allows students to interact directly with faculty and residents and become an integral part of the neurosurgical team.

Third year medical students now have the option of choosing Neurosurgery as one of their required 3-week surgical subspecialties.  Students interested in pursuing a neurosurgical residency are encouraged to enroll in this 3-week neurosurgery rotation.

A series of weekly didactic lectures will be given to those 4th year medical students enrolled in the required Neuroscience course.  To complement the didactic lectures, a quiz in neurosurgery will be given at the end of the four week required clerkship.  This quiz will be generated from the didactic lectures presented throughout the student's time on the service.

The Department of Neurosurgery welcomes visiting students to rotate in the department.  Visiting clerkships are offered for 4-week blocks.  If you are interested, please contact Dr. Erich Richter MD (ericht@lsuhsc.edu, 504.568.6123) for more information as well as Lindy Mills in Student Affairs (lmills1@lsuhsc,edu, 504.568.4874).

For students interested in neurosurgery as a career choice, advanced clerkships are available as electives throughout the year.  For more information please contact Dr. Richter (ericht@lsuhsc.edu).
