Welcome to the General Psychiatry Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in our program.  The LSU-Ochsner Psychiatry Residency Training Program is committed to providing a superior education to future colleagues.  The program has a long history of training well-rounded psychiatrists who are capable of excelling in any setting after graduation.  In furtherance of its mission, the program’s educational sites include public and private facilities, which enable the residents to gain experience with a wide variety of patients and clinical situations.  We are proud of our residents, who tend to be practical, “hands-on” physicians with great empathy and commitment to their patients.  Our faculty, a group with diverse backgrounds and interests, adds to the educational breadth and allows residents the opportunity to tailor their training according to their individual needs and interests.

Training in New Orleans is an opportunity to be part of a unique and exciting time in history.  The program maintained education and service throughout Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, as Ochsner Medical Center never ceased operations.  As the city reopened, LSU psychiatry was present each step of the way, tending to the mental health needs of a traumatized city.  Our educational and research sites have regained stability, and the program continues to provide care to the community.

Choosing a residency program is an especially important decision, and the experiences inherent to LSU-Ochsner training assures residents of a solid foundation for a successful career.

Erich Conrad, M.D.

Director, LSU-Ochsner Residency Training Program

Ochsner Medical Center is a large, multi-specialty group practice that began 60 years ago when five chairmen of the surgical specialties left academia to start their own clinic.  From the beginning, Ochsner Medical Center has been committed to excellence in patient care, research, and education.  Today, the Department of Psychiatry is composed of 12 staff psychiatrists, five psychologists, nine social workers, and our compliment of psychiatric residents.

In July 1999, the merged LSU/Ochsner Residency began.  We believe that this affiliation enables the resident to experience a diversity of clinical rotations and to learn from the finest teachers.  At Ochsner we provide the resident with a private practice setting and close clinical supervision.  We have 11 inpatient beds on the main campus as well as two partial hospitalization programs: the Behavioral Medicine Unit and the Addictive Behavioral Unit.  The Behavioral Medicine Unit uses a cognitive-behavioral approach to treat patients with co-morbid psychiatric and somatic disorders.  The Addictive Behavioral Unit is a day program for the rehabilitation of patients with substance abuse problems.

In addition to the inpatient and day programs, the resident also participates in our large outpatient clinic, in which over 30,000 outpatients are seen annually.  Under careful supervision, the resident participates in an assessment team and selects a caseload of various diagnoses and clinical situations.  The resident does psychotherapy, medication management, and learns to work with other members of the mental health team.

The consultation liaison service has been an integral aspect of patient care in Ochsner Medical Center for the past 20 years. While on the consultation-liaison service, the resident evaluates and helps in the care of a rich variety of patients, especially in the area of transplantation.

We at Ochsner are very enthusiastic about our collaboration with LSU.  We believe that by selecting the best teachers and clinical experiences, we have created a residency program that is second to none.  We hope that you will consider joining us.
