Thank you for your interest in our program. The LSU-Ochsner Psychiatry Residency Training Program is committed to providing a superior education to future colleagues. The program has a long history of training well-rounded psychiatrists who are capable of excelling in any setting after graduation. In furtherance of its mission, the program’s educational sites include public and private facilities, which enable the residents to gain experience with a wide variety of patients and clinical situations. We are proud of our residents, who tend to be practical, “hands-on” physicians with great empathy and commitment to their patients. Our faculty, a group with diverse backgrounds and interests, adds to the educational breadth and allows residents the opportunity to tailor their training according to their individual needs and interests.
The following are some points as to why our program is highly desirable:
1. There is a very congenial atmosphere among the residents, who are intelligent and friendly, work hard and enjoy themselves. Also, the faculty are all approachable, supportive and devoted to excellence in teaching.
2. The program is very receptive to resident feedback, and residents are capable of forming their own path with a variety of fascinating electives during 4th year.
3. There is no overnight in-house call. Interns go home at 10 PM, and there are no night float months. Second year residents take home-call roughly every 9th night. There is no call required during the third and fourth years of training.
4. Moonlighting is available during the second, third and fourth years of training as long as the resident has passed step 3 and is in good standing.
5. Training in New Orleans is an opportunity to be part of a unique and exciting time in history. Living in New Orleans is fun, and there is always something to do.
Choosing a residency program is an especially important decision, and the experiences inherent to LSU-Ochsner training assures residents of a solid foundation for a successful career.
Ochsner Medical Center is a large, multi-specialty group practice that began 60 years ago when five chairmen of the surgical specialties left academia to start their own clinic. From the beginning, Ochsner Medical Center has been committed to excellence in patient care, research, and education. Today, the Department of Psychiatry is composed of 12 staff psychiatrists, five psychologists, nine social workers, and our compliment of psychiatric residents.
At Ochsner we provide the resident with a private practice setting and close clinical supervision. We have 14 inpatient beds on the main campus as well as two partial hospitalization programs: the Behavioral Medicine Unit and the Addictive Behavioral Unit. The Behavioral Medicine Unit uses a cognitive-behavioral approach to treat patients with co-morbid psychiatric and somatic disorders. The Addictive Behavioral Unit is a day program for the rehabilitation of patients with substance abuse problems.
In addition to the inpatient and day programs, the resident also participates in our large outpatient clinic, in which over 30,000 outpatients are seen annually. Under careful supervision, the resident participates in an assessment team and selects a caseload of various diagnoses and clinical situations. The resident does psychotherapy, medication management, and learns to work with other members of the mental health team.
The consultation liaison service has been an integral aspect of patient care in Ochsner Medical Center for the past 20 years. While on the consultation-liaison service, the resident evaluates and helps in the care of a rich variety of patients, especially in the area of transplantation.
