Latine Health Scholars (LHS) Honors Program


The Latine Health Scholars (LHS) Honors Program is a 4-year program that supplements the regular School of Medicine curriculum by adding unique clinical experiences and academic courses related to providing health services to the Spanish-speaking community. The LHS curriculum is designed to enhance students’ linguistic proficiency in medical Spanish, cultural understanding of the Latine/Hispanic population, and understanding of health-related considerations when working with the Latine/Hispanic population.

Students are expected to take additional elective courses that increase their ability to understand and communicate in Spanish. Students are expected to engage in a scholarly project throughout their involvement in the program and are expected to complete a capstone project. Students are also expected to engage in clinical practice and rotations with Spanish-speaking physicians to apply and enhance their medical skills with Spanish-speaking patients.


Requirements for admission at the end of L1 Fall semester:

  • Intermediate Spanish language proficiency (CEFR  B1)
  • Level B1-B2 - Can understand the main points and details of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can produce simple connected texts on topics and can describe experiences and events with reasons and explanations for opinions and plans
  • Good academic standing by the LSUHSC School of Medicine
  • Application Letter of Interest detailing their desire to work with the Latine/Hispanic population and detailing their experience with the Spanish language
  • Interview in Spanish with the LHS Faculty Director (Dr. Del Corral Winder), second-year medical students, and a Spanish-speaking faculty.
