Steve Nelson, MD, is Section Chief of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and Director of the Alcohol Research Center, a large interdepartmental project funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism with an annual budget of two million dollars per year. His major clinical interests include pneumonia, adult cystic fibrosis, and sepsis. His research interests are primarily directed at (1) understanding normal pulmonary host defense mechanisms, (2) defining how disease states undermine and disrupt these defense mechanisms, and (3) determining the potential of biological response modifiers to provide innovative approaches to both the prevention and treatment of pulmonary infections. Dr. Nelson serves on the editorial board of several journals, and is a member of the Best Doctors in America.
