Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center is part of the Louisiana State University system of colleges and universities. The main campus was established in 1860 and is located in the state capitol, Baton Rouge. The New Orleans campus was established in 1931 with the founding of the School of Medicine in New Orleans at 1542 Tulane Avenue. Over the years the school has grown dramatically and a number of new buildings have been erected. The New Orleans campus now spans three campuses and encompasses five professional schools-- Allied Health Professionals, Dentistry, Medicine, Graduate Studies, and Nursing. These schools and their facilities provide education, research, patient care services, and community outreach.

The Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy, headed by Dr. Sam McClugage, has 21 full-time faculty. Department research programs focus upon the study of membrane properties of neurons; visual system function; brain development and plasticity; developmental biology; and basic mechanisms of cell function.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center is located in the heart of downtown New Orleans, one of the most unusual and fascinating cities in America. This eclectic French-Spanish Carribbean appendage of the Southern United States is as much an east coast port city as it is a quaint Southern town. The city is flush with tropical foliage and magnificent 19th century architecture. It is also the 'Big Easy' of perpetual parties (Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, the Essence Festival, the French Quarter Festival, Octoberfest) and a unique home of jazz music and art.
