FOURTH YEAR U/S SUBSPECIALTY HOME

Emergency Ultrasonography

Congratulations to Vanessa Piazza, MD, our ultrasound fellow for 2008-2009!

Under the direction of Lisa Mills, MD, an Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship-trained physician, the department of ultrasound has become a well established part of the department of emergency medicine at LSU and has recently added a fellowship opportunity. Although the fellowship is a new addition to emergency medicine at LSU, there is great enthusiasm and support for its growth. The program is one year in duration and is highlighted below. The curriculum includes:

  • 6-8 clinical shifts in the emergency department at LSU per month
  • 3 ultrasound shifts per week free from clinical duties (50% of these to be accompanied by the ultrasound director)
  • Per ACEP recommendations, a minimum of 800 documented studies
  • Review of all studies once a month with the ultrasound director
  • 1 Month of echocardiography with the Cardiology department
  • 1 Month of OB/Gyn ultrasound with the OB/Gyn department
  • 1-2 Months of ultrasound training with the Radiology department
  • Bedside teaching of residents and medical students
  • Assisting the ultrasound director with the resident elective
  • A minimum of three resident lectures over the course of the year
  • Research project with presentation of abstract
  • Attendance at a major ultrasound conference
  • Assisting the director in administration

Future additions to the fellowship are in development and include:

  • Pediatric ultrasound
  • Sports medicine applications

The Division of EM US has four machines - a Zonare Z.one with digital video recording capability, two Sonosite Micromaxx's with digital image recording, and an iLook for small procedures.

We also offer a senior medical student elective in EM ultrasound.
