IM/EM Residency Program

The Combined LSU Emergency Medicine/Internal Medicine Residency Program is a five year (60 month) training program that provides clinical and academic instruction in both Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. Residents in the program undergo 30 months of training in Internal Medicine and 30 months of Emergency Medicine, six months per year of each specialty. Each of the 5 years is divided into 6 months of training in Emergency Medicine training and six months of training in Internal Medicine for a total of 30 months of Emergency Medicine and 30 months of Internal Medicine. At completion of the combined program the resident is qualified to sit for the Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine boards.

The Internal Medicine component of the program includes experience in outpatient primary care, in-patient medicine service, and multi-specialty consultation services. The Emergency Medicine component of the program includes extensive emergency department training at the Medical Center of Louisiana, as well as several private regional hospitals; exposure to medical and administrative pre-hospital issues, and training in toxicology, trauma and research.
