Facilities

University Hospital is an extremely busy urban Emergency Department with a yearly volume of greater than 70,000 patients. This facility continues a tradition of over 275 years of quality medical care to the citizens of New Orleans and Louisiana, with an emphasis on teaching and indigent care. The ED has recently been completely redesigned and renovated, and we are fortunate to enjoy state of the art technology adding to our already world-renowned trauma care.

During your rotation, you will be working in two locations: the Main Emergency Room (MER) and Fast Track (FT). In both locations, you will be supervised by board-certified Emergency Medicine faculty and have the opportunity to work with EM residents and interns as well as off-service interns from both LSU and Tulane. You will be responsible for seeing your own patients. After performing an H&P, you may present the patient either to an EM resident or directly to staff for guidance. All procedures must be directly supervised by an EM resident or staff, and EM staff must review the case and sign the patient's chart prior to discharge. Major trauma resuscitations will be done by the upper-level EM resident with staff backup. The EM resident serves as team leader and will assign you a role in the management and care of trauma patients, and you are expected to observe and participate in each resuscitation.
