Volunteering

v   Welcome to the LSU Emergency Department! Nowhere else in America can you find a more exciting place in which to experience emergency medicine. LSU – EMIG is proud to be able to allow its members the opportunity to volunteer in this unique environment. Please use the following guidelines and rules when volunteering at LSU Interim Hospital:

v   Join EMIG/pay dues.

v   Have an Attending Physician sign the ED Authorization Form.

v   Send an email to Thomas Cullen requesting three dates and times you would like to volunteer along with your name and class year.

o    Students can volunteer after 9pm on weekdays and any time on weekends for any amount of time. Most patients go to the ED between 8am-8pm. Shifts of 4-8 hours are recommended.

o    To avoid overcrowding only two students at a time will be scheduled to volunteer at University

o    What you do while volunteering will depend on your skill level and what you are comfortable doing.

v   Wait for an email response confirming your volunteer time slot.

v   Only use the ED entrance.

v   Please wear professional, but comfortable clothes. Scrubs are perfectly acceptable.

v   You must wear your short white lab coat, and LSUMC ID at all times while in the ED.

v   When you arrive at LSU Interim Hospital (University Hospital), locate the Staff ED physician and identify yourself as an EMIG member there to volunteer. He/she will then direct you to someone whom you may follow for the duration of your time there.

v   It is necessary to complete an ED Authorization Form and have it signed by an attending at the end of the shift.
