Bio

James H. Carter, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Research & Scholarly Activity at the LSU Rural Family Medicine Residency in Bogalusa, La. Born in Biloxi, Miss., and raised in Atlanta, he entered Georgia Institute of Technology on a scholarship, completing the undergraduate program in chemistry in 1966. He served as a laboratory assistant at the Neely Nuclear Research Reactor facility on the Georgia Tech campus investigating the electron capture reaction of 7Be. Dr. Carter entered graduate school and pursued research in the biosynthesis of viomycin and capreomycin, both anti-tubercular drugs. He completed his Ph.D. program in 1970 and served as a clinical research scientist at Medical Laboratory Associates, a clinical/anatomical pathology laboratory in Birmingham, Ala., until 1971.

In 1971, Dr. Carter joined Biomedical Products Corporation in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., as General Manager of the diagnostic reagents manufacturing department. In 1978, he joined the Coulter Corporation of Miami, Fla., as research scientist, director of diagnostics research and development, and finally as corporate scientist for hematology. In this position he was named as an inventor on seventeen U.S. patent applications and numerous foreign equivalents. In 1998, he joined the start-up diagnostics company Clinical Diagnostic Solutions/Boule AB of Stockholm, Sweden, as the chief scientific officer. He was named as an inventor on two additional U.S. patent applications during his tenure. He left Boule in 2006 to join the LSU Rural Family Medicine Residency in Bogalusa. 

Dr. Carter is married to Nina Spurrier. They have two children and four grandchildren.
