Bio

Michele McCarthy Larzelere, PhD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Larzelere received her training in clinical psychology at LSU in Baton Rouge and completed her internship at the New Orleans Veterans Administration Medical Center, where she participated in the post-traumatic stress disorder specialty track. Prior to coming to LSUHSC in 1998, she served as the director of the Masters and Johnson Trauma Stabilization Program.

Dr. Larzelere has research interests in physician and patient interactions. She has been involved in several grants examining cognitive behavioral components of  disease state management for asthma and diabetes. Dr. Larzelere has also conducted research in the areas of sleep and anxiety disorders.

As a faculty member of the LSU Family Medicine Residency Program in Kenner, Dr. Larzelere's responsibilities include teaching and supervising residents and medical students in the areas of physician-patient relationship and behavioral science. She also serves as coordinator of the behavioral science and research rotations and as a member of the Residency Recruiting Committee.

Dr. Larzelere maintains a caseload of patients referred primarily from the LSU Family Medicine clinic. These patients are evaluated and treated for a variety of psychological and behavioral-medicine issues, including smoking cessation, weight loss, and medication adherence, primarily through the provision of individual cognitive-behavioral interventions. Her public service is concentrated in the areas of stress management and the implementation of behavioral interventions targeted at prevention/health promotion and the management of existing health problems.

Dr. Larzelere is a member of several organizations, including the American Psychological Association, Society of Behavioral Medicine, Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
