The mission of LSU's Family Practice Residency Program in Lafayette is to train competent and dedicated family physicians for Louisiana. Concurrently the Program provides direct patient care, acts as a resource to improve the community's health, and promotes scientific research into general and primary health care.

Throughout three years of graduate medical education, our Family Medicine residents spend two or more half days weekly in the Family Medicine Center (FMC). The balance of the curriculum is as follows:

LSU provides disability insurance and professional liability insurance for residents in training. Health and life insurance and other benefits of employment are available for modest premiums paid by the resident. Subject to obtaining proper state licensure, moonlighting is allowed after the first year of residency.
The LSU Family Medicine Residency Program provides clerkships for third- and fourth-year medical students. The medical student actively participates in patient care, including performing procedures, under the supervision of Family Medicine residents and faculty. University Medical Center (UMC) is owned by the State of Louisiana and operated by Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - Health Care Services Division. Located in Lafayette, Louisiana, UMC provides medical, obstetrical, pediatric, and surgical services.
In 1983, UMC opened with 186 patient rooms. The hospital's upper floors house the labor and delivery suite, newborn nursery, neonatal intensive-care unit, intensive-care unit, telemetry unit, other inpatient beds, an endoscopy suite, and other patient-care units. The ground floor houses UMC's emergency department, general and specialty clinics, radiology, operating rooms, cardiology, clinical laboratory, blood bank, pharmacy, conference rooms, Voorhies Auditorium, learning resource center (library), LSU faculty offices, administrative offices, and the cafeteria.
One July 1, 1989, the Residency Program moved to UMC from Walter O. Moss Hospital in Lake Charles, La.
In 1997, the program moved into UMC's new 11,300-square-foot Family Medicine Center (FMC). It contains 20 examination rooms, 2 procedures rooms,a nurses' station, 2 treatment rooms, 2 residents' offices, 2 conference rooms,FM faculty offices, a business office, and the patient reception area. There is also a small kitchen, break room, and locker area for employees and medical students. A covered walkway connect the FMC to UMC's hospital buidling.
For physicians who have completed residency training, UMC has established two fellowships that are administered by the Residency Program. There is a Geriatric Medicine Fellowship and a Family Medicine Fellowship in Obstetrics. Both are 12-month programs.
