Sports Medicine

The Section of Sports Medicine is an inter-departmental section comprised of four main components-clinical, educational, research and community outreach-functioning as a team with the sole mission of evolving into the No. 1 Sports Medicine center in the nation. Our goals are to provide the most current, comprehensive, quality clinical care available anywhere, improve fellowship and learning within LSUHSC via education, expand knowledge through cutting-edge research, and improve the lives of New Orleans-area residents with ongoing outreach.

Sports Medicine care includes injury prevention, training and nutritional counseling, arthritis/osteoporosis screening, fracture care, musculoskeletal injections, and exercise prescriptions.

TEACHING AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

The educational component of the Section of Sports Medicine is geared to the advancement of interest in and knowledge of all aspects of Sports Medicine in a collegial manner and the promotion of lifelong learning in the field.

  • Sports Medicine in Family Practice Fourth-Year Elective -This course provides students with an opportunity to develop competence in assessing and managing common sports injuries with an emphasis on safe return to competition. In addition, the course allows students to understand the principles of prevention that reduce the risk of injury for athletes of all ages.
  • Sports Medicine Interest Group-The mission of this student-run organization is to expand awareness and knowledge of the principles and concepts of Sports Medicine within the LSUHSC family and the New Orleans community at large through didactic, research and outreach endeavors.

RESEARCH

Research within the Section of Sports Medicine focuses on healthcare topics important to the local New Orleans area, including inactivity and obesity, osteoarthritis, and functionality and training issues. The Section is dedicated to the investigation of local, regional, and national public-health issues, as well as exploring the cutting edge in human performance and training.
