Genetics Faculty Participate in Afterschool Program

In the summer of 2008, Dr. Gregory worked with Brittany Morgan, who is a ScienceREACH Coordinator for Communities in Schools of New Orleans, Inc.  Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation's largest dropout prevention organization. The mission of CIS is to champion the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life.  By bringing caring professionals into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are free to teach, and students – many in jeopardy of dropping out – have the opportunity to focus on learning.

Working together, Dr. Gregory and Ms. Morgan planned an afterschool Forensics Science Club as a pilot project in McMain High School and Martin Luther King High School.  Not only will the club provide the students with an opportunity to meet a variety of local experts but it also incorporates information from biology (DNA forensics and forensic pathology), physics, math and computers.
