Kong is a PhD student in the Department of Genetics at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He was born in Changchun, China. He received a Bachelor of Science from Fudan University in Genetics in 2000.

After working for a biomedical company in Shanghai, Kong joined the Department of Genetics as a graduate student in August 2002.
