Every year 4th grade students from NOLA Public Schools participate in the Science Partnership Field Day. The Department of Genetics provides demonstrations and graduate students assist in this worthwhile program! On May 21, 2009, over 130 students from schools in the greater New Orleans area came to campus and learned about everything from brains to DNA. Dr. Paula Gregory taught the kids how to isolate DNA from strawberries, using items they can find around the house. The kids were very enthusiastic about the demo and how it relates to genetics and to what they have seen on the CSI TV Shows! Graduate student Kevin Dietz helped in the program as well.
