A native of Karala, India, Dr. Mathai earned her medical degree from the Trivandrum Medical College in Karala. She then completed internships at both Trivandrum Medical College and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Brooklyn, New York and a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.
Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Mathai was appointed clinical instructor at Downstate Medical Center, State University of New York. During this time she also served as a staff physician at King’s County Hospital in Brooklyn. In 1984 she moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to accept a position as staff physician at the Louisiana Rehabilitation Institute and assistant professor in the Section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Louisiana State University Medical Center. She also served on the staff of several other area hospitals.
Dr. Mathai is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in Electrodiagnostic Medicine.
