Dr. Keith Van Meter, Chief of the Section of Emergency Medicine, is the 2009 recipient of the Albert R. Behnke Award given by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society. This award was presented in recognition of Dr. Van Meter’s outstanding scientific contributions to advances in the hyperbaric biomedicine field.
On June 11, 2009, the LSUHSC Alumni Association's Committee of 100 - Champions of Excellence dedicated the Charles V. Sanders, MD Chair of Internal Medicine to honor Dr. Sanders' for his many years as an outstanding physician, researcher, educator, and administrator. As chairman of the Department of Medicine since 1989, he is the longest serving chair of medicine in the United States.
Dr.Betty Lo-Blais, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, was awarded the Allen A. Copping Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award for 2009. The Copping Award is given annually in recognition of the recipient’s excellent ability to teach clinical skills and mentor students in their person and professional growth both in the classroom and on rounds.
Dr. Lopez is the recipient of this year’s Henry L. Van Dyk, M.D., Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in Clinical Science, which he has won numerous times. This award recognizes faculty members for their dedication to education and approachability to students and residents.
Each year the Aesculapian Society honors the teaching excellence of its faculty, residents and interns. The Excellence in Teaching Award acknowledges these individuals for their approachability, enthusiasm and superior quality of instruction. Nominees are chosen by each class and then voted on to select a winner. This year’s recipients from the Department of Medicine are Dr. Fred Lopez (Faculty), Dr. Jess Duet (Intern), and Dr. Tathagat Narula (Resident).
Dr. Charles Sanders, Chair of the Department of Medicine, has been voted president-elect of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigators (SSCI.) The SSCI is dedicated to the advancement of medical research and the exchange of knowledge, information, and ideas. Its members are committed to mentoring future generations of medical investigators and promoting careers in academic science.
Two of our physicians, Dr. Lynn Besch in Infectious Diseases and Dr. Cathi Fontenot in Comprehensive Medicine, were named Women of the Year for 2008 by CityBusiness, a weekly publication serving the New Orleans business community.
