Health Insurance
Residents are eligible to enroll in the state employees’ health insurance or state managed health care options through Employee Benefits (568-7780) or LSUHSC resident health insurance.
Disability Insurance and Emergency Funds
The opportunity to participate in group long-term disability coverage is available through the Graduate Medical Education Office. In the event a House Officer experiences a loss of income as a result of an emergency, he/she should contact the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs for possible avenues of assistance. Malpractice Insurance
The State of Louisiana provides professional liability coverage for House Officers.
All professional liability matters should be directed to Ron Gardner, Vice Chancellor of Administrative, Community and Security Affairs at 568-4810.
Leave
Vacation Leave - Vacation leave is non-cumulative per year. Interns are entitled to twenty-one (21) days per year (including weekends). Residents are entitled to twenty-eight (28) days per year (including weekends). In addition, the Medicine Residency Program arranges the Christmas/New Years schedule such that house officers receive 6 days off over either Christmas or New Years.
Sick Leave - House Officers are permitted fourteen (14) days of paid non-cumulative sick leave per year.
Educational Leave - House Officers are permitted five (5) days of educational leave per year to attend/present at medical meetings.
Maternity/Paternity Leave - To receive paid maternity leave, available vacation leave and sick leave must be utilized. Paid and unpaid maternity leave for up to six weeks or extended unpaid maternity leave may be granted. Paid paternity leave must utilize available vacation leave. Extended leave without pay may be granted.
Family Leave - Residents who have worked for LSUHSC for twelve months may be eligible for up to twelve weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in each twelve-month period.
Military Leave - If called to active duty, fifteen days of paid military leave are permitted.
Lab Coats, Meals, and Pagers
At the beginning of each year, we honor our new interns with a White Coat Ceremony. The Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans and Touro Infirmary also provides lab coats for residents rotating in their facility. House Officers are provided on-call meal tickets for call nights. In addition, lunch is often provided at the residents daily afternoon conferences. Pagers are provided for all residents by the Office of Graduate Medical Education.
Moonlighting
Moonlighting opportunities are available. The Medicine department covers malpractice for Charity Hospital. Residents also moonlight at additional facilities in New Orleans, Houma and Baton Rouge.
