The activities of the Section of Endocrinology are divided between teaching, research and patient care. Although each is given appropriate attention, teaching lies at the heart of the section's commitment to the university. This dedication is exemplified through numerous contributions to the school's curriculum, from the first year of medical school, to the teaching of fellows in their final years of training. Members of the section deliver lectures to students in all four years of the medical school. Clinical problem solving is stressed as a teaching tool. Clinical members of the section rotate on the clinical teaching service during the junior and senior years of medical school. These daily rounds utilize the consults received from the services of University Hospital. In addition, the section maintains several outpatient clinics, which form the most important component of the clinical curriculum.
Next in importance to the section's contribution to medical education are its efforts in research. Over the past 20 years, the section's faculty has published over 500 scientific communications including papers, abstracts and book chapters. Areas of scientific inquiry include obesity, appetite control and the neurobiology of stress. Specific research projects utilize animal studies, cell preparations and molecular biology techniques. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of research dollars have been garnered by the faculty for their research projects. Trainees of all levels are encouraged to take optional rotations and participate in one of these research endeavors.
