More than 40% of residency training during Internal Medicine rotations consist of ambulatory experiences, with an emphasis on cardiology. Of the required 24 months of internal medicine, only 9 months are wards months, however, residents have the option of doing more ward rotations if desired. Not only do Medicine/Pediatrics interns and residents work closely with categorical internal medicine residents and subspecialty fellows, but they are always well-supervised and mentored by LSUHSC faculty.
To enhance the ambulatory experience, all Medicine/Pediatrics PGY-III and PGY-IV may rotate through General Medicine Consults, an elective that emphasizes the art of pre-operative consultation and inpatient general medicine consults. A new formalized mandatory Geriatrics outpatient rotation organized and precepted by a board-certified LSU geriatrician, Dr. Charles Cefalu, will enhance the residents’ proficiency in outpatient management of classic medical and psychosocial issues associated with the elderly population including dementia, depression, anxiety, and accurate assessment of ADLs (Activities of Daily Living).
During general medicine ward months, residents rotate at various sites including University Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center - Kenner, and Touro Infirmary. These educational rotations provide unparalleled learning opportunities that help residents gain confidence and competency to practice sound, state-of-the-art medicine. Each affiliated hospital offers unique perspectives on the management of insured and indigent patients. Together, these rotations provide the depth and breadth of clinical experiences essential for a career in primary care physician, hospitalist medicine, fellowship training, or urgent care.
MCLNO’s University Hospital, a 300-bed tertiary care facility for private and noninsured acute care patients, will serve as the primary teaching hospital for the majority of LSU medical and surgical residency programs. This newly renovated facility will ultimately have 200 telemetry medical-surgical beds, a new renovated and expanded 40-bed medical and surgical ICU unit and an emergency room that now includes a 23-hour observation unit that will facilitate the expedient discharge of patients with suspected acute coronary syndromes. Additionally, comprehensive Ob/Gyn services with Level II and III nurseries and a fully staffed well-baby nursery continue to expand to meet the needs of the community.
