So you've decided to choose Med/Peds for your residency?

All prospective applicants are welcome to contact our Program Director, or any of the residents to have questions answered or to get more information about our program.

We offer a medicine pediatrics ambulatory elective, which is open to all fourth year medical students. The student is usually paired with a med/peds resident to make the experience more didactic as well as having someone available to provide information about the program. Those interested can review the sample schedule and can contact the Program Director in order to tailor the experience to meet the applicant’s wishes. This rotation is the by far the best way for the student to interact with multiple med/peds residents and faculty in a variety of settings.

Rotations are also available in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Prospective applicants can choose from a variety of options, including inpatient wards, subspecialties (Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, etc.), and intensive care units in both disciplines. Please contact us for a list of this years elective options.

We hope you would consider visiting with us during your fourth year. Let us know if we can assist you in any way.

Find the answers to most commonly asked general questions about Med/Peds on the NMPRA web site.

Most answers to questions about the LSU MedPeds residency program can be found in the Overview and Residency Program sections of the website. A quick view, however, is outlined below.

General

The LSU program is a four-year program with two years each of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics alternating in four month blocks. By the completion of the program, each resident is eligible to sit for the Internal Medicine (ABIM) Board exam and the Pediatrics (AAP) Board exam. We are currently funded for 7 positions each year and usually interview from 4-5 times this number to fill the spots.

Interviews

Interviews are granted on an individual basis after completion of the ERAS application and are routinely conducted from November through January. The interview is one day and involves meetings with the internal medicine and pediatrics faculty, the residents, and the program director, Dr. Betty Lo-Blais. Tours of both the downtown and uptown facilities are included as is lunch at a local New Orleans bistro.

Medicine Specifics

All Internal Medicine training takes place at the Medical Center of Louisiana (MCLNO) and a few local affiliate hospitals. See the sample schedule for specifics; generally, after 24 months, you will have completed 8 ward months, 2 ICU months, 2 ER months, 6 required electives, 2 month of Med/Peds ambulatory, and 4 electives. Ward call averages Q4 while ICU is Q3. Other months and electives are call-free.

Pediatrics Specifics

Pediatric training is divided between the Peds ward at MCLNO and Children's Hospital, Louisiana's only free-standing children's medical facility. See the sample schedule for specifics; generally, after 24 months, you will have completed 6 ward months, 1 PICU & 3 NICU months, 2 Well Baby Nursery months, 3-4 ER months, and 8 elective months. The training, by RRC requirement, is 60% inpatient and 40% ambulatory. Call is Q4 as an intern and while on ward and ICU months. Otherwise, upper level residents have 4-5 calls per month on electives. Med/Peds residents also enjoy two totally call-free months during residency.

Moonlighting

Many moonlighting opportunities are available to Med/Peds residents within both the Internal Medicine and Pediatrics departments with the approval of the course director. These cannot, however, begin until completion of the 16 month internship.
