GU (Foley) Catheterization and Pelvic Examination / Rectal Examination

OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES  At the end of this lab, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and review appropriate Urethral catheterization (males and females): indications, contraindications, technique and equipment. 
  • Demonstrate and review appropriate Pelvic Examination: indications, contraindications, technique and equipment. 
  • Demonstrate and review appropriate Breast Examination.
  • Demonstrate and review appropriate Rectal Examination: indications, contraindications, technique and equipment.
  • Demonstrate and review appropriate Prostate Examination.
  • Demonstrate and rewiew appropriate Testicular Examination.

Read Urethral (Foley) Catheterization in the Student Procedure Manual; read Bates (11th Ed.) textbook pages 405-431 & 519-595 (E-Book Link: pages 405-431 & 519-595); and view videos on Male Urethral CatheterizationPelvic, Bimanual, and Breast Exams prior to the session.  Also review the PowerPoint presentation on Skills Lab 6, which may be printed out as a handout.  Take on-line pre-test, then print and bring to the scheduled lab session.
