Direct Observation of Clinical Skills

In 2007, the Curriculum Oversight Committee (along with the clerkship directors) developed lists of core clinical skills to be directly observed by faculty in each year of undergraduate medical education.  Once the list was developed, the committee developed specific "critical performance criteria" for the level of proficiency that a student is required to demonstrate before a faculty member attests to their competence.  The skills (with links to the critical performance criteria) are listed in the table below. 

These skills were cited by program directors as the most desirable skills for beginning interns.  They are also in keeping with the core areas of clinical competence as defined by the  ACGME.  While not inclusive of all clinical competencies taught and evaluated at LSU School of Medicine, they represent milestones of clinical competence that are required at each stage of education.  Compliance is monitored by the Office of Medical Education by use of a bar code scanning system and reported to the Curriculum Oversight Committee.  We are confident that all students achieve these milestones of clinical competency regardless of the location of their clinical training.
