Standard Precaution, Getting Started, Sterile Technique

OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES  At the end of this lab, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate and review the use of gown, glove, and eye protection when the risk of exposure to body fluid is present.
  •  Demonstrate and review hand washing and surgical hand scrub technique.
  •  Demonstrate and review the sterile application of gloves and the maintenance of sterile field. 
  • Understand the term “nosocomial infection”; recognize the magnitude of this problem in the U.S. hospitals and the role of handwashing in the prevention of these infections.

Read the first 7 topics (i.e., Introduction ... Surgical Scrubs) relating to universal precautions in the Student Procedure Manual.  Also review the PowerPoint presentation on Skills Lab 1, which may be printed out as hand out.  Take on-line pre-test, print and bring to scheduled lab session.  (If you have difficulty opening PowerPoint: Download, Save then Open.)
