Our mission at the LSU Multiple Sclerosis Center is to provide the best possible care to patients with multiple sclerosis, conduct research that will lead to new and better treatments for this disease, and educate new neurologists in how to deliver state-of-the art care for people with MS. We are also committed to MS community outreach with regard to
educational programs for both MS patients and MS care providers.

We strive to be the leading MS academic center for southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

There is great hope for patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Currently, there are four FDA-approved first-line MS therapies (Interferon beta-1a (Avonex, Rebif), interferon beta-1b (Betaseron) and glatiramer acetate (Copaxone) that are both safe and effective for multiple sclerosis.  More aggressive treatment options include Natalizumab (Tysabri) and mitoxantrone (Novantrone) for patients who need them.  Fingolimod (Gylenia) is a new oral treatment option.

There are also multiple new MS therapies that will be available in the near future including both oral agents and new infusions. We are confortable with managing all these therapies.

Our goal at the MS Clinic of New Orleans at LSUHSC is to provide our patients with an
individualized treatment plan that considers the whole patient.

In our multiple sclerosis clinic we have two board-certified neurologists (Jesus Lovera, MD and Amparo Gutierrez, MD) devoted to the care of patients with MS, as well as three nurses who have extensive experience caring for MS patients.

We have developed a multi-disciplinary model of
care at LSU so that our MS patients have direct and easy access to experts at LSU in the fields of urology, rehabilitation, psychiatry, neurosurgery, and others.  We also actively partner with several providers in the community in the fields of radiology, physical and occupational therapy, neuropsychology, and others.

Our patients come to our Multiple Sclerosis Center mainly from the New Orleans, LA area but also from Baton Rouge,LA, Lafayette,LA, Gulfport, MS, Biloxi, MS and Mobile, AL. We have built a network of other providers in these areas to provide additional specialty care that patients with MS need.

As multiple sclerosis physicians, we also seek to contribute to the development of new treatments by participating in multicenter trials of new medications as well as conducting our own research.  Patients in our clinic regularly have opportunities to participate in clinical trials of new medications.

LSU Multiple Sclerosis clinic has recently relocated. The new address for our multiple sclerosis clinic is:

3700 St. Charles Ave

New Orleans, LA 70115
