Neurosurgery Student Clerkship

The Department of Neurosurgery at LSUHSC offers clinical clerkships at both West Jefferson Medical Center and University Medical Center. The purpose of the clerkship is to provide 3rd year medical students with direct neurosurgical experience. The clerkship allows students to interact directly with faculty and residents and become an integral part of the neurosurgical team.

Third year medical students have the option of choosing Neurosurgery as one of their required 3-week surgical subspecialties or as a 2-week Career Planning Elective (CPE) rotation (see link on left sidebar for more information). Students interested in pursuing a neurosurgical residency are encouraged to enroll in either of these options and also schedule a meeting with the program director, Dr. Gabriel Tender for mentorship and guidance before 4th year. Should you have any questions of how to choose our rotation as a third year please contact the Program Coordinator, Brooke Baltz at 504-568-6120.

NSURG 418 - Neurosurgery Acting-Internship (LSU and Visiting Students)

Departmental acting internships allow LSUHSC medical students, as well as students from other medical schools, to have a four-week experience on the LSUHSC neurosurgical service. Participants are senior medical students who are interested in pursuing a career in neurosurgery. The sub-interns usually spend two weeks on each of the neurosurgery services at both University Medical Center and West Jefferson. During this time, they make rounds with the residents, accompany faculty and residents in the operating room, work-up patients for critique by the resident and attending staff, and prepare presentations for didactic conference (see link on left sidebar for more information).

Interested outside medical students must submit their application through Visiting Student Application Services (VSAS) to be eligible for the rotation. If you have any questions, please contact the Student Director, Dr. Gabriel Tender, MD or the Student Coordinator, Brooke Baltz at 504.568.6120.

Visiting Clerkship in Neurosurgery Under-Represented Minority Scholarship

As a joint venture between the Division of Diversity and Division of Community Health and LSU Neurosurgery, we are pleased to sponsor a fourth year senior medical student who plans a career in Neurosurgery and wishes to experience a rotation in our department. Students must self-identify as an under-represented minority (URM) and display genuine interest in exploring issues of social determinants of health, population medicine, access to care, and social justice.
