| Retirement Party for Ms. Connie in the Continuity Clinic |
At LSU, we are a residency program that thrives not only in excellence in education and clinical care but also in community involvement. The following are some of the activities that residents and fellows participate in.
Residents, fellows, and staff traveled to Nicaraugua, Mexico, and Africa this year in order to participate in the global healthcare for women.
In Nicaraugua, Dr. Chesson and resident Dr. Julie Martin performed incontinence procedures on numerous women who had no access to such specialized surgeries and medical care.
In the Mexican Rainforest, resident Dr. Summer Khan participated in setting up a clinic for Mexican Indians. During the trip the group was involved in obstetrical and primary care of approximately 5,000 patients who had little or no access to primary care.
In Africa, Dr. Chesson, Dr. Echols, and fellow Dr. Young Zheng traveled to Niger where they performed corrective procedures on women and girls with complex fistulas. These women had been expelled from their homes by their families due to these fistulas from complicated childbirth.
Once a month, residents and medical students hold a prenatal education class and tour for our patients. This class serves to educate and relieve the anxiety of our soon to be mothers. Most importantly it has made a difference in the care of many high-risk patients, immigrants, and the indigent. The class is supervised by residents. This program allows medical students to become involved in obstetrical clinical care as well and to encourage residencies in OBGYN.
This is a student run preventive health clinic in urban New Orleans which LSU OBGYN residents volunteer to supervise. Many of the patients are battered wives or abused teens. Most have had limited access to healthcare. Residents and students involved in this clinic have made a huge difference in the community through this project.
