Lab Coats, Meals, Night Call

Availability of housing, meals, lab coats, etc., will vary among the hospital to which House Officers are assigned.

Pagers

Pagers are provided and managed by the Office of Graduate Medical Education.

Accommodation of Vacation, Illness and Leaves of Absence

The HO 1 residents receive 21 days of vacation per year and the HO 2, HO 3 and HO 4 residents receive 28 days per year.

The accommodation of vacation, illnesses and leaves of absence are handled by the Chief Administrative Residents in conjunction with the Program Director. At the beginning of each fiscal year, the yearly rotation schedule and the vacation schedules are made with the requests of each resident considered. The schedules are then finalized and distributed to all the faculty and residents. Each month the Chief Administrative Resident writes up a "Latest Scoop" letter concerning the events for the month, the vacations, and the coverage needed. This is then distributed to all the residents. When additional unexpected absences occur, the Chief Administrative Residents arrange for short-term coverage.

Licenses

All levels of residents are required to obtain a federal and state DEA number before December of their HO 2 year. The resident is responsible for renewing the DEA numbers. The federal DEA is renewed every 3 years at the cost of $210 and the state DEA number is renewed every year at the cost of $20. In, addition to this, all residents are required by state law to keep current a vaild Louisiana State Medical License. Not having a current State Medical License is grounds for immediate dismissal and revocation of the current LSU House Officer Agreement Contract.

The fee for both the federal and state DEA number/license and the Louisiana State Medical License is NOT subsidized by the department.
