Through development of their research projects, residents receive individual instruction regarding epidemiology, research methodology and design, and statistical analysis. These areas are also discussed in various conferences throughout the year. The research program is supported by nursing, laboratory, and pharmacy in the institutions we serve. Our adherence to strict guidelines to protect our subjects and our commitment to perform scientifically sound research are appreciated and supported by our institution. In addition, funds are set aside for residents to attend a national or regional meeting during their third or fourth year. If a house officer is presenting a paper or a poster, time and funds are made available.

During the first six months of this year, you need to put together the IRB application. (Getting IRB approval for LSU as well as the appropriate hospitals is a lengthy procedure. Don’t procrastinate.) Notice of your IRB approval is turned in to the committee by February 1 of the academic year.
This year is devoted entirely to performing your project. During February/March you will return (with your mentor) to the committee to discuss the progress of your project.
The first six months will be used to analyze your data. In January you will briefly meet with the committee to present a rough draft of your presentation.
