LSU VITREORETINAL FELLOWSHIP

Curriculum

LSU offers a two-year, 24 month, AUPO compliant Clinical Retina Fellowship.  The fellows operate the only retina service in the LSU system, so there is a high patient volume.  The fellowship is half based in New Orleans and half in Baton Rouge; fellows alternate rotations. The Fellowship philosophy is that the fellow is here to learn to do the procedures not watch attendings do it.  Fellows are introduced to all aspects of the posterior segment of the eye to enhance their skills in examination, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical procedures. The Retina Service offers complete vitreoretinal capabilities with digital imaging, ICG angiography, OCT, ultrasound, and PDT. In addition, fellows can become involved in the many research projects conducted by the clinical and laboratory science faculty.

Fellows develop their management skills by working closely with the ophthalmology residents and medical students who rotate through the Department. Fellows are responsible for case presentations at monthly conferences, patient management in the Retina Service, resident instruction, participation in didactic lectures, and interpretation of imaging and diagnostic tests of retinal patients.
