"The State of the Science: The Red Cell Storage Lesion and Fresh-Frozen vs. Never-Frozen Plasma"

Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology

At the Conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Understand the physiology of the red cell storage lesion and describe the current evidence regarding its clinical impact.
  • Describe the research that remains to be performed before the clinical relevance of the red cell storage lesion can be assessed and discuss the ethical aspects of designing the appropriate clinical trials.
  • Understand the currently available plasma products, and discuss surprising new evidence regarding fresh-frozen versus never-frozen plasma.

Pathology Grand Rounds 2012 Overall Objectives:

  • Review the current guidelines for standards of diagnostic pathology across multiple subspecialty areas.
  • Introduce novel practice approaches reported in the literature to laboratory medicine including efficiency, utilization and performance review.
  • Discuss molecular mechanisms of common pathologic conditions and explore diagnostic molecular pathology as an ancillary tool.

Louisiana State University School of Medicine – New Orleans (LSUSOM-NO) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.  LSUSOMNO designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)TM.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in this activity.
