Research Opportunities

Dr. Ricardo Gomez serves as the research faculty facilitator for residents interested in performing research during residency. He conducts a yearly one hour session to introduce the topic of research and reviews the many ways in which residents can be involved in research. He surveys the faculty and maintains a list of potential projects in which residents can participate and provides this to the residents.  He also informs them of the many avenues available at LSU and nation-wide for funding dollars for residents as well as the local, regional, and national meetings where resident participation is accepted. He maintains written literature on the basics of conducting research that can be utilized by the residents.

Residents interested in research contact faculty in their area of interest. Faculty members serve as mentors to assist and motivate residents in research projects, including case reports, literature reviews, retrospective studies and clinical trials.

Each year, the LSU Department of Pediatrics hosts Pediatric Research Day, which includes a monetary award for the Best Resident Research Presentation.

Residents take part in the Annual Society of Pediatric Research, Southern Society Regional Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana. Reminders and instructions for application are sent out throughout the year.

The LSU Department of Pediatrics provides an educational stipend for residents who have submitted abstracts or will be giving oral or poster presentations at local, regional, or national educational meetings.
