In addition to the vacations listed above, residents also receive six days off around either Christmas or New Year's.
Health
Pediatric housestaff are provided with a major medical policy through Children's Hospital. The cost is $25/month for single coverage and $125/month for family coverage. Other state-sponsored options are available through the State Employees' Group Benefits Program or Oschner Health Plan.
Malpractice
Professional liability insurance is provided by the State of Louisiana and covers all activities approved by the departmental chairman.
Disability
LSU Medical Center provides disability insurance to all residents.
All residents are eligible to participate in the Deferred Compensation program in lieu of Social Security. If this option is chosen, 6.5% of the residents's gross monthly salary is deducted for contribution to deferred compensation. The balance may be withdrawn without penalty, when the resident leaves state service.
Professional Meetings
Senior residents in Pediatrics and Medicine/Pediatrics may attend one major meeting approved by the chairman, if a scientific abstract is accepted for presentation. Expenses are reimbursed up to $1000, and the time spent at the meeting is not considered vacation.
Educational Stipend
An annual stipend of $250 is provided for Pediatric residents in their 1st and 2nd years and for Medicine/Pediatric residents in their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years. If senior residents do not attend a national meeting, a stipend of $500 is provided to them to use towards either books or the cost of a meeting.
Meals
One meal ticket is provided per overnight call at Children's Hospital at no cost. All other meals at the hospitals are available at a special rate for housestaff.
Parking
Parking decals for the parking garages and lots adjacent to University Hospital and Children's Hospital are issued to all residents at no cost. Access to all lots at LSUHSC is controlled by the University Police.
Academy Membership
Membership in the American Academy of Pediatrics is provided to all residents and includes major publications, such as The Red Book, and subscriptions to Pediatrics In Review (PREP) and Pediatrics.
Maternity Leave
Provisions will be made for maternity leave in accordance with the American Board of Pediatrics, which requires 33 months of training for eligibility for Pediatric Board certification. LSUHSC does not grant paid paternity leave beyond the normal vacation and sick leave allotment, but unpaid leave may be taken.
