Professor A H Jan Danser

 

Dr. A. H. J. (Jan) Danser, born june 9th, 1962, studied pharmacy at the University of Amsterdam from 1980-1986. In 1985, as a student, he worked at the Department of Physiology and Biophysics (head: Professor Dr. P.M. Vanhoutte), Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, studying the role of prejunctional b1 receptors in canine bronchi. After obtaining his pharmacist’s degree, he joined the Department of Internal Medicine (head: Professor Dr. M.A.D.H. Schalekamp) at the DijkzigtHospital, ErasmusUniversity, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, as a PhD student in 1987. He defended his thesis (‘Local renin-angiotensin systems’) in 1992, and then joined the Department of Pharmacology (head: Professor Dr. P.R. Saxena) at the ErasmusUniversity. He currently is Professor of Pharmacology and heads the Division of Pharmacology within the Pharmacology, Vascular & Metabolic Diseases Sector of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Erasmus MC. His research focuses on the pathogenesis and therapy of hypertension and heart failure, with special emphasis on the renin-angiotensin system, its local function(s) and the synthesis of its components at tissue sites. He has supervised >20 PhD students since 1993. In addition, he teaches basic and clinical pharmacology as well as pharmacotherapy at the Erasmus MC. He is a member of several international societies, including the International Society of Hypertension, the American Heart Association, and the British Pharmacological Society. He regularly reviews papers for journals like Circulation, Hypertension, Circulation Research, American Journal of Physiology, British Journal of Pharmacology, and Cardiovascular Research. He is/was a member of the Editorial Boardof Hypertension, Journal of Hypertension and Expert Opinion in Investigational Drugs. He has published >175 papers in internationally refereed journals, and he has presented >150 invited lectures worldwide. He received several awards, including the Irbesartan Research Award (1997), the World Heart Federation Young Investigators' Award (presented at the XIIIth World Congress of Cardiology, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1998) and the 1st Award of the European Young Masters Tournament (presented at the 106th Meeting of the German Society of Internal Medicine, Wiesbaden, Germany, in 2000). He is married and has two sons and one daughter.
