Tracing its roots to the historic Charity Hospital, the LSU Interim Hospital provides an ideal location for training in Psychosomatic Medicine. LSU Interim Hospital is a 250 bed, Level One Trauma Center that serves the region and is renowned for its excellence in treating the traumatically injured. The psychiatry consultation service works closely with the trauma surgery and critical care services to provide care for a multitude of extraordinary patients. Internal medicine and neurology services also frequently utilize the consultation service and collaborate in the treatment of very complex cases.
Ochsner Medical Center has a 450 bed hospital and is a nationally recognized multispecialty healthcare delivery system. It is a transplant center for heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas. The resident gains experience in running a private practice model of consultation psychiatry. The large obstetric practice and resulting consultations round out the fellows education at this site.
A Psychosomatic Medicine clinic is present at both sites and provides a venue for subspecialty training and clinical care. Thess outpatient clinics provide the fellow with the opportunity to provide follow up care for selected consultation service patients and perform evaluations for specialized procedures, such as bariatric surgery, transplantation surgery, interferon therapy, epilepsy surgery, etc. Fellows attend clinic twice weekly.
