The Biopsychosocial Case Conference is a clinical forum designed to stimulate an interchange of ideas and perspectives on a particularly interesting patient. Medical students, residents, ward staff, and occasionally other faculty are in attendance. The resident intern assigned, under the supervision of the ward attending, prepares a formal write up including a biopsychosocial formulation and submits it to the guest interviewer/consultant by Tuesday the week of the Case Conference. The intern and ward attending together also write 2-3 questions of interest for the consultant. Whenever possible, the case selected should fit with the interviewer’s interests and special areas of expertise; although certainly every case can be explored beneficially from whatever perspective seems appropriate to the interviewer. The intern presents the case after which the patient is brought into the room. The guest consultant interviews the patient for about 20-minutes, after which the consultant comments on the case. The comments can expand on the team’s clinical questions about the case or any other area of interest. Afterwards, the floor is open to discussion.
