The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Training Program

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident Training Program received its latest accreditation in October 2006 and is fully accredited for an additional 5 years. The program has 6 residents, 3 in the first year and 3 in the second year. Most of our residents that have graduated from our program have successfully obtained certification from the Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Adult and Child Psychiatry. Generally, 1/3 of our residents go into Public Psychiatry, 1/3 go into Private Psychiatry and 1/3 go into Academic/Research psychiatry. The program offers a didactic and clinical experience that above and beyond the routine/basic requirements of the ABPN RRC recommendations for successful completion of a resident’s two year required and expected training.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the LSUHSC, SOM, Infant, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Resident
Program is threefold: To Educate, To Serve, and To Contribute.

1. To Educate/Train resident physicians in the field of Child/Adolescent Psychiatry.
The training program focuses on developing and introducing knowledgeable, capable, and well-prepared child psychiatrist for the practice of child psychiatry in the community. In addition, the training program encourages the educating of patients, families, and others on mental concerns and issues.

2. To provide the highest quality and most ethical clinical services possible to
children and adolescents and their families who are in need of mental health services in the general public and community. The training program applies this worthy aim to the treatment of children and their families in all settings; inpatient, outpatient, and other settings.

3. To encourage the residents in the program to engage and pursue scholarly
activities including research endeavors that will contribute and expand on the quality of care and treatment options of the children and families who have mental illness/psychiatric disorders.

Components of the training program include:

  • Special Summer Orientation with senior residents providing lectures on Introduction to Child Psychiatry 
  • Didactics (minimal 7, range 7-9); Eclective well balanced and rounded approach 
  • Clinical Case Conferences seminars and Clinical Practicums 
  • Family Therapy Seminars and Practicum 
  • Journal and Movie Club 
  • Inpatient Services—8-10 months (1/2 day) 
  • Emergency/Crisis Intervention Experience 
  • Outpatient Experience in public and private psychiatry 
  • Infant/Early Childhood and Preschool lectures and clinical experiences 
  • Research Experience (Psychopharmacology; Emerging Therapies & qEEG. 
  • Introduction to Research Seminars and Exercises 
  • School and Forensic Psychiatry rotations 
  • Pediatric Consultation Liaison rotation 
  • Electives—first year 1 month and second year 2 months. 
  • Adult and Child Prite Examinations and Mock Board Examinations 
  • Scholarly project requirement

Each resident is assigned 3 supervisors and a site supervisor for each clinical rotation.
