Hurricane Gustav

As many of you might be aware of by now, the City of New Orleans seems to be in the sights of another tropical storm/depression forming in the Gulf of Mexico.
Taking this into account, the LSU/Ochsner Psychiatry Residency Program, building upon our experiences at the forefront of providing mental health to the New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina, has put together a plan which will take many of our faculty, residents and staff to affiliated hospitals outside of the area set to be affected, while leaving a functioning core behind in the city to administer care to those left behind, not only at Ochsner Medical Center, which was the only hospital functioning throughout Katrina, but also at University Hospital.
Our chairman, a staff physician, and a volunteer resident will be attending to those in need of care at the Convention Center, should the storm decide to strike us.
As was the case 3 years ago, our residency program will continue it's mission of serving the people of New Orleans, particularly in this time of great need.

HIV testing

on May 6, 2008 at 5:52 PM
Healthcare providers are encouraged to include testing for HIV
infection into their clinical practice as a routine for clients 13-64 years
old, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The written separate consent is no longer necessary. Consent for HIV
testing shall be incorporated into the patient’s general informed consent
for medical care on the same basis as are other screening or diagnostic tests. However, patients continue to have the option to
refuse testing.
Patients agreeing to test will be given an oral or written explanation
of the meaning of HIV infection, and significance of negative or positive
results. The patient shall be offered an opportunity to ask questions. If a
patient declines testing, it shall be documented in the progress note.

Chiefs' Update, 20 December 2007
Posted by
npejic@lsuhsc.edu
on December 20, 2007 at 11:48 AM
Fellow LSU Residents,
Tulane will be opening an inpatient unit at NOAH sometime in January. Thereafter, we will increase our intern call collaboration with Tulane. We are busy working out the details and trying to make the intern call schedule as high quility and low frequency as possible (q5 to q9). More updates in January.
Thanks to Arwen, Ross, Jamie H., and Paula Wilt with putting the call schedules together!
Please submit Duty Hours before years end. Remember this is necessary to keeping our program accredited. Please submit Patient Logs thru December 2008 too. Completing these tasks in one component of professionalism and your residency training. I admit it's often difficult to stay on top of the paperwork.
The BSC/Irma Bland Psychotherapy Clinic is slated to open in January. This means ALL residents can get started learning psychotherpy and honing your skills early in training. And yes, you will be able to practice med management if necessary (Ben McAllister!). The orientation is January 10th at Ochsner; see below for details.
Please email me suggestions for the web page. Remember, we, residents, direct how we use and our page. So, your input is needed. We added Dr.Griffies MHERE Guide to practicing and prescribing in the ED, which is excellent. Also, we added all our recommended books. Please send me names of books (with ISBN) that you like and we'll add it to the list.
Happy Holidays,
Pejic and Pancholy

Six Steps for Happiness.
Posted by
npejic@lsuhsc.edu
on November 6, 2007 at 1:09 PM
1. Give yourself permission to be human. When we accept emotions -- such as fear, sadness, or anxiety -- as natural, we are more likely to overcome them. Rejecting our emotions, positive or negative, leads to frustration and unhappiness.
2. Happiness lies at the intersection between pleasure and meaning. Whether at work or at home, the goal is to engage in activities that are both personally significant and enjoyable. When this is not feasible, make sure you have happiness boosters, moments throughout the week that provide you with both pleasure and meaning.
3. Keep in mind that happiness is mostly dependent on our state of mind, not on our status or the state of our bank account. Barring extreme circumstances, our level of well being is determined by what we choose to focus on (the full or the empty part of the glass) and by our interpretation of external events. For example, do we view failure as catastrophic, or do we see it as a learning opportunity?
4. Simplify! We are, generally, too busy, trying to squeeze in more and more activities into less and less time. Quantity influences quality, and we compromise on our happiness by trying to do too much.
5. Remember the mind-body connection. What we do -- or don't do -- with our bodies influences our mind. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy eating habits lead to both physical and mental health.
6. Express gratitude, whenever possible. We too often take our lives for granted. Learn to appreciate and savor the wonderful things in life, from people to food, from nature to a smile.

Volunteers Needed!
Posted by
akhan4@lsuhsc.edu
on November 2, 2007 at 1:18 AM
We're looking for some volunteers to remove books, files and other items from the old offices at the old LSU building next to Charity... 1542 Tulane Ave... We'll be packing up patient files from the Graduate Training Clinic (GTC), Resident files, books from the old Psychiatry Library, and some lamps, and other things from the residents offices... The building will be open from Thursday, November 8th to Monday, the 12th. We will be loading it into a truck and taking it to the BSC, where it will be stored until the offices there are finished. We'd like to have at least 5 people. If you would like to help, please leave a message under here, or let Kelly know. Thanks, Majid

PGY-1 and 2 are now at 100%! We are missing just a couple of residents' pictures, and a bunch of "Hometowns," so email them to Dr.Majid.Khan@gmail.com and we'll get it done. Also, at the bottom left, Nick and I decided we'd add a Section for Applicants and Interviewees, with things such as driving directions, schedule during the day of interview, etc. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Majid

Cell Phone Numbers to be Released to Telemarketers!

REMINDER....all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies October 12th, 2007, and you will start to receive sale calls.
....YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your
time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked.. You cannot call from a different phone number.

No More Charity Myths
Dr. Larry Hollier, chancellor of LSU's Health Sciences Center, is tired
of the myths surrounding the proposed joint venture between the VA
Hospital and LSU's Health Care Services Division. The
proposed new medical district -- including the VA Hospital and
University Hospital -- will include the only Level 1 Trauma Center in
this region, a badly needed Crisis Intervention Unit for psychiatric
services, and a modern teaching hospital for medical, nursing and
allied health students. It will be an economic juggernaut for downtown
New Orleans, as construction will inject $1.2 billion into the local
economy.

Psychiatrists Top List in Drug Maker Gifts

Link to article... (New York Times) "As states begin to require that drug companies disclose their payments

psychiatrists earn more money from drug makers than doctors in any
