Dr. Griffies initiated the mentoring program to foster residents' career development. Residents voluntarily choose a faculty mentor by PGY II year and notify the Residency Director. The Residency Director contacts the faculty to assure he/she has available time. If so, the resident contacts the faculty and meets approximately once a month.
The Mentor is not part of the resident's progress committee. However, he/she does review the resident's six month progress evaluations. The mentor does not discipline the resident, but may counsel the resident on relevant issues like choosing where to do a fellowship, how to study for the boards or how to deal with transference. Anything goes. This is meant to be a flexible, insightful and fun experience.
The mentor may be Ochsner or LSU staff. If there is no chemistry, then you can pick a new mentor. Perhaps your career plans change and you want to move in another direction. Then change mentors. A passionate mentor may provide that light at the end of the tunnel we all need to pull through residency. Good luck.
