Welcome to the Clinical Psychology Internship Program!

Thank you for inquiring about our APA accredited internship*. The psychology internship is committed to the goal of helping the psychology intern to develop competencies in the traditional core skills of clinical psychology such as psychodiagnostic testing, clinical interviewing, treatment planning, consultation, and psychotherapy, though the program is designed to be flexible enough to take into account the needs and professional goals of each trainee.

LSUHSC School of Medicine offers three distinct tracks allowing for either broad/generalist training, or highly specialized/focused training in Clinical Psychology.  We typically accept six (6) internship positions each year; two (2) positions for the Child/Adult track, two (2) for the Adult track, and two (2) for the Infant/Child track. The Child/Adult track clinical psychology intern has the opportunity to obtain generalist training working with a diverse population of clients/patients accross the life span. The Adult track intern has the opportunity to obtain more focused/highly specialized adult inpatient and outpatient experience, while the Infant/Child track intern has the opportunity to obtain highly specialized training in their work with infants, school-aged children, adolescents, and their caregivers.

Psychology interns may have the opportunity to sample various "subspecialty" areas that may help them to determine whether they would like to pursue further specialty training at the post doctoral level. Some examples of these areas are clinical neuropsychology with HIV+ adults, school based treatment, victims of violence, trauma and/or rural trauma, working with first responders, and child custody/forensic evaluation. Other elective experiences may be offered (at the training director's discretion) based on intern interest and level of experience.

A major emphasis of the program is on the provision of quality clinical training under the supervision of LSUHSC New Orleans faculty. A major strength of our training program, based on feedback from graduates who are currently in practice, is the quantity and quality of supervision provided for each intern. Each intern receives an average of 4 to 6 hours of individual and group supervision per week.

Given that New Orleans is in the process of actively rebuilding following Hurricane Katrina, LSUHSC School of Medicine offers many exciting opportunities for working with diverse treatment populations and gaining varied clinical experiences. The cultural diversity of the Crescent City provides a rich training ground that will prepare you for a very challenging and rewarding career. We hope to see you soon in our charming city.
