Child/Adult & Adult Track: Outpatient Experience

The clinical psychology intern will see outpatients in psychotherapy at each of the following LSUHSC NO's outpatient adult and child clinics:

LSUHSC New Orleans Behavioral Sciences Center (BSC):

Since 2008, the Behavioral Sciences Center has become the primary outpatient clinic for the entire department and its various trainees of all disciplines. The BSC is located in the Touro-Gumble Building, 3450 Chestnut Street, New Orleans, in close proximity to the other major training sites. Medical Director is Howard J. Osofsky, M.D, Ph.D. and the director of Psychotherapeutic Services is Phillip Griffin PhD.

Through federal funding by a Primary Care Stabilization Grant managed by the Louisiana Public Health Institute the LSU Department of Psychiatry has been able to dramatically expand the BSC from six offices to twenty five so that it now easily accommodates the service and training needs of the department

Psychology interns see their adult and child case loads at the BSC where they perform intake evaluations, individual psychotherapy, couples and family therapy, and group therapy. Outpatient psychological evaluations will also be part of the BSC experience. This clinic has the capability of offering services to virtually anyone without consideration of ability to pay. Referrals to the BSC come from all segments of the community (i.e., self referral, community practitioners, mental health agencies, university counseling centers, and inpatient facilities).

Supervision is provided by the full-time faculty psychologists and by several part-time clinical faculty who are engaged in clinical practice within the community.  There are opportunities to provide, under supervision, a full range of psychotherapeutic interventions including dynamic therapy, cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy, behavior therapy, and behavioral medicine oriented applications for the medically compromised and chronic pain conditions. Interns will carry three or more cases at the BSC for the entire year. The types of cases will be determined by the Clinical Director and the Director of Internship Training and by the needs of the intern and the cases available.

Behavioral Sciences Center Assessment Clinic (BSC-AC) (All Interns)

The BSC Assessment Clinic was established in 2010 to help meet the urgent need for psychological evaluation services to the greater New Orleans area which was heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina resulting in a decrease of available diagnostic centers and clinicians in the region.  The BSC-AC provides interns with more specialized training and experience assessing patients of all ages referred for a variety of psychiatric, medical, and behavioral issues.  Psychological/cognitive issues including learning problems, ADHD, depression, anger, anxiety, and memory/cognitive disorders are routinely assessed in the assessment battery which includes the WPPSI/WISC/WAIS, Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement, Trail Making Test, Achenbach Scales, PAI/MMPI, and CPT to name a few.

A standardized battery approach is used with the clinician, with the assistance of their clinical supervisor, supplementing the battery with additional measures as indicated by the referral question.  Services are available for individuals ages 3 to 89.  Under the direction of the BSC-AC Clinical Director, Dr. Brennan, the psychology intern receives supervision from a licensed clinical psychologist on the core faculty.  In addition, all interns attend a weekly 90-minute Case Conference Seminar to formally present and discuss cases assessed thorough the clinic.   Interns are required to carry an active assessment case at all times throughout the training year with adjustments made to the caseload depending on complexity of cases assigned (average 2-4 per month). The majority of services completed through the BSC-AC are conducted in one-day (about 6 hours) with additional sessions scheduled as needed.  Results with appropriate recommendations are provided in 30 to 60-minute feedback session appointments within 4 to 6 weeks from completion of all aspects of testing including collection of collateral reports from caregivers, teachers, etc.

Office of Mental Health –Algiers Child Outpatient Clinic

Located on the west bank of New Orleans, the Algiers Outpatient Clinic serves children from Orleans, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes.   Referrals to this clinic come directly from the OMH Access Center, which is a triage center for children with mental health needs. At this clinic, Child/Adult interns have the opportunity to work closely with children and their families, on an individual and/or group basis. Therapeutic orientations are varied at this clinic and can include intensive dynamic therapy, brief psychotherapy, cognitive therapy, and behavioral medicine/behavioral therapy cases (e.g., stress related disorders, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain syndromes).

Additionally, opportunities for psychological and psychoeducational evaluation are available. At this clinic, the Child/Adult intern will become an integral member of a multidisciplinary team which includes psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, psychologists, psychology interns, social workers, and nurses.   In addition to direct patient services, the Child/Adult intern has the opportunity to participate in school and/or medical consultations. Cases are provided to the intern based on need and the intern’s training goals. Supervision, provided by a LSUHSC Department of Psychiatry faculty member is provided on-site.  The Child/Adult intern will also have the opportunity to participate in a weekly interactive multidisciplinary didactic.   Interns on the Child/Adult Track are expected to spend 20 hours per week at the Algiers Clinic.
