POLICY ON STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES and ACCOMMODATIONS UNDER THE ADA
School of Medicine students must confirm his or her ability to meet the Technical Standards required by the School upon acceptance. Reasonable accommodation will be made for otherwise qualified persons with disabilities.
The Technical Standards required may be found in the School of Medicine Catalog.
The process of submitting a disability for reasonable accommodation is as follows:
- The student must formally claim a disability in writing and submit the letter to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs.
- The student then must provide documentation to confirm the disability.
- For verifying learning disabilities, the University requires that the student use a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist certified in the diagnosis of learning abilities for proof of the disability.
- The student must pay for this diagnosis.
- The student must either use a University psychiatrist or clinical psychologist or an approved psychiatrist or clinical psychologist with a valid certification. An approved list of doctors will be given to the student.
- If the diagnosis is confirmed, the treating doctor will prepare a prescription as to what constitutes reasonable accommodation for the student’s condition and that prescription will be followed.
- Once the final documentation has been approved, the course directors will be notified of the approved accommodations.
- If the student and course director do not agree on the accommodations then they should contact the Dean of Student Affairs for referral to the LSUHSC ADA Issues Coordinator.
- If the diagnosis is not confirmed, the student will be denied accommodation in writing.
