Objectives:

To provide the student with the opportunity to reinvestigate the anatomy of a particular area(s) of the body prior to entering his/her residency in a manner that emphasizes the anatomical basis of clinical medicine. To provide the opportunity for students to learn and perform basic clinical procedures that will be expected of them during their residency programs. To provide an opportunity for students to observe and then perform common surgical procedures on cadavers. To bring in specialists from the fields in which the students will be training and have these physicians demonstrate the clinical importance of anatomy in the practice of their specialty.

Means of Implementation:

The course will be carried out in the Gross Anatomy Laboratory in the Medical Education Building. Students will review basic anatomy through dissection and learn basic clinical procedures using both embalmed and fresh cadaveric specimens.

Method of Evaluation:

Students are evaluated as to their attendance, attitude and participation in both laboratory and didactic sessions. Participation includes performing assigned dissections and surgical procedures on the cadaveric material. Students are also expected to respond to challenging questions presented to them throughout the elective.
