Duration: 4 weeks

Availability: All blocks except Block 7

Number of students: 6 students Blocks 1 thru 6; 4 students Blocks 8 thru 10

Objectives:

The rotation is designed to introduce the medical student to Anesthesiology as a medical specialty. Under direct faculty supervision, students administer general and regional anesthesia. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of critical care skills such as airway management (including endotracheal intubation), intravenous catheter placement, arterial blood sampling, and intraoperative cardiopulmonary management. A weekly didactic lecture series provides the student with the basics of pharmacology and physiology and clinical topics related to the field of anesthesiology.

Means of Implementation:

In addition to clinical activities in the operating room, students receive didactic instruction through a series of lectures focusing on pharmacology, physiology, and the basics of anesthesiology. These basic lectures are over and above the weekly didactic series. Textbooks are provided. Students also participate in departmental conferences, including Morbidity and Mortality Conference, which occurs in conjunction with the Department of Surgery Morbidity and Mortality conference, which is held weekly. Two weeks of day shift, one week on afternoon shift, and one week of night shift provide a broad range of experiences to the medical student. The night call affords exposure to trauma, recovery room management, and obstetric anesthesia.

Method of Evaluation:

Students are graded not only on a final examination of the basics of anesthesiology, but their performance in the operating room and on the interest demonstrated in reading, regularity of attendance, and participation in anesthesia conferences.
