Located in Louisiana's capital city, Baton Rouge, Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital is a 238-bed hospital operated by the state of Louisiana. The hospital was opened in March 1968. An architecturally interesting design provides the hospital with a unique arrangement of patient rooms surrounding a central nurses' station on either end of the building. In-patient, out-patient and emergency care is provided to an urban and rural patient population of about 421,000 in a seven-parish area surrounding Baton Rouge. An excellent medical library is available at all times for reference and study. There is immediate access to the resource libraries of the LSU Medical Center and Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans to provide additional needed materials.
Full-time faculty members of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, based at Baton Rouge, direct the approved intern and residency programs at Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital. In addition, resident staff members in a number of specialties are rotated to EKLMH as part of their training in the programs of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans.
The full-time faculty of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine who direct the programs include a clinical director, director of medical education, and director of intern training. To further enhance and broaden the training programs, other members of the New Orleans faculty of the LSU School of Medicine regularly and frequently visit the hospital, serving as consultants and conducting conferences. Many physicians from the Baton Rouge community serve as visiting faculty and assist in the training program.
The training programs at Earl K. Long Memorial Hospital offer farm out rotation to the other clinical departments of the LSU School of Medicine. These include general surgery, orthopaedics, ob/gyn, urology, pathology, pediatrics, internal medicine, radiology and family medicine.
Baton Rouge is the center of a rich cultural section of the South where many nationalities can be discovered through a variety of culinary experiences. New Orleans, with its many fine restaurants and other attractions, is only an hour's drive from Baton Rouge. The Gulf Coast of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas are easily accessible over good highways. The excellent climate allows the serious sportsman to enjoy year-round fishing and hunting opportunities as well as tennis, golf, swimming, water skiing, and boating.
