Course name and number:Acting Internship in OBGYN (LSU-MCLNO) OBGYN 420a.; Acting Internship in OBGYN (LSU-EKL, Baton Rouge) OBGYN 421i.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of junior clerkship

Duration: 4 weeks

Availability: Offered all blocks only to visiting students from approved medical schools.

Number of students:

One (1) student in New Orleans per block
One (1) student in Baton Rouge per block

Objectives:

An advanced clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology designed to facilitate the transition from medical student to intern.

Means of Implementation:

As acting intern, each student will be assigned to a resident team. He/she will be an active member of the team and perform under the guidance of the senior resident and attending faculty. Activities include attendance at OB/GYN surgeries, hospital ward assignments, labor and delivery room care and participation in general and subspecialty outpatient clinics. The AI will be on night call with the assigned team with the opportunity to plan management of emergency situations in OB/GYN.

Method of Evaluation:

Evaluation is based on general attendance, fund of knowledge, interest and a required written report. Subjective and objective assessment of the student clinical performance will be done by resident and faculty.

 

Course name and number: Acting Internship in High Risk Obstetrics (LSU-MCLNO) OBGYN 431a.

Pre-requisite: Successful completion of junior clerkship

Duration: 4 weeks

Availability: All blocks

Number of students: One (1) student per block at New Orleans

Objectives:

  1. Extend student’s knowledge of prenatal care and delivery as applied to high-risk obstetrical patients.
  2. Identification of risk factors and risk management procedures.
  3. Knowledge of drug use in pregnancy.
  4. Study of physiologic changes in pregnancy as they relate to maternal disease.
  5. Increasing patient interviewing and personal interaction skills.
  6. Exposure to obstetrical clinical research projects.

Means of Implementation:

  1. The student will perform admission histories and physical examinations on high-risk prenatal admissions.
  2. The student will present cases at staff rounds on Mondays and Fridays.
  3. The student will attend high-risk prenatal clinics and seminars.
  4. The student will attend Monday and Friday a.m. departmental staff/resident/visiting professor presentations.
  5. The student will attend the delivery of high-risk obstetrical patients.
  6. The student will take OB night calls at least once weekly with the second year resident on the prenatal service.
  7. The student will, at his/her option, participate in ongoing clinical research projects in the department.

Method of Evaluation:

The student will be graded on ward performance by faculty and the senior resident on the Prenatal Ward and Delivery Unit.
